The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the
Essentials of the Profession, Inc. The University of Texas Southwestern

continuing medical education for physicians.

medical ethics and/or professional responsibility education.

what is currently in use and what may be available in the future, there
may be "off-label" use discussed in the presentation. Speakers have
been requested to inform the audience when off-label use is discussed.

Target Audience: This activity is designed for all physicians as well as
individuals/organizations concerned or interested in the quality
and delivery of health care, medical regulation and discipline.

Concepts and Method(s): Rich media instruction will be delivered
via CDROM discs. Audio will support text including
case review and analysis. The speaker will respond to questions
on an individual basis via e-mail.

Course Objectives: After completing this Continuing
Medical Education activity, participants will be
able to:

Explain how the pain management movement has changed
medical practice, board investigations and ultimately improved
the quality of patient care.

Identify physician behaviors that may result in complaints and further
investigations by the state medical board.

Describe strategies to assist physicians in differentiating between
the legtimate pain patient and the potential abuser.

Enhance a physician's ability to make sound medical and/or
professional/ethical decisions resulting in improved patient care
and treatment outcomes.

Course Director's Biography:

Scott M. Fishman, MD

Dr. Fishman is chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and professor of
Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of California, Davis.
He was formerly medical director of the Massachusetts General Hospital
Pain Center at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Fishman received his medical degree from the University of
Massachusetts Medical School. His formal clinical training is in internal
medicine (Greenwich/Yale University School of Medicine) and psychiatry
(Massachusetts General/Harvard Medical School). He completed Pain
Medicine fellowship training through the Department of Anesthesia and
Critical Care at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Fishman is board
certified in internal medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine),
psychiatry (American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry) and pain
medicine (American Board of Pain Medicine.)

Dr. Fishman lectures on all aspects of pain and its treatment throughout
the U.S. and has authored “The War on Pain”, a national released book
through Harper Collins Publishers and co-authored “The Massachusetts
General Hospital Handbook of Pain Management” through Lippincott
Williams and Wilkins Publishers and “Essentials of Pain Medicine and
Regional Anesthesia through Elsevir”. He has authored many peer-
reviewed articles in medical journals, book chapters and other scholarly
reviews and is the editor of the Forensic Pain Section in the journal
“Pain Medicine.” He has served as the pain expert for
Discoveryhealth.com and has a monthly question and answer column
in Pain Monitor Newsletter for the American Pain Foundation.
Dr. Fishman has most recently been honored with the
University of California, Davis Dean’s Award for Excellence
in Mentoring and the John and Emma Bonica Award for
Public Service from the American Pain Society.

Dr. Fishman was the President of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
He currently sits on the board of directors for the American Pain Society. He
has also served on the board of directors for the American Pain
Foundation. He advocates for the field of pain medicine with
consumers and lawmakers, having testified in both state and national
legislatures. He serves as a consultant to numerous government
agencies and organizations such as the Federation of State Medical
Boards, the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA), the Medical Board
of California, the Office of the California Attorney General and the
California Medical Association.

Dr. Fishman’s clinical interests include cancer relation pain management,
peripheral and central neuropathic pain, chronic opioid usage and spinal
injection therapies. His major research interests include models for
functional assessment and pharmacovigilence in chronic opioid therapy,
novel analgesic therapies, models of visceral pain, models of hyperalgesia
and central sensitization, novel informatics strategies to serve clinical
practice, quantitative sensory testing in acute and chronic pain states,
neuronal plasticity and brain imaging in pain.
