Compass Points for Physicians

Guidelines to assist physicians from a law enforcement perspective.

Chief of Enforcement (Retired)
Medical Board of California

Welcome

Physicians have long feared the possibility of a consumer
complaint being filed against their license and the subsequent
intrusion into their practice by zealous board investigators.
Often, physicians do not understand the basis for board
complaints or what the investigators may be seeking.
Although, interestingly, board investigations are conducted
very similarly from state to state. As a physician:

What actions can you take to help prepare you
to respond to complaint?

What information should be documented in your
medical records?

How can disciplinary action be avoided?

You are invited to participate in a unique training
opportunity from the regulatory perspective aimed to
alleviate your fears as various medical issues are
discussed from the perspective of one who has
investigated them. These presentations are designed
to inform physicians about complaints commonly
received by the board that lead to investigations and
possible disciplinary action. Discover new strategies
to incorporate into your medical practice while improving
your understanding of the investigation process through
the utilization of "Rich Media."

The content of these presentations are solely those
